Data Maturity: Three-fourths of enterprises struggle to meet enterprise data demands, new global research finds

Comprehensive data management and AI-ready infrastructure are requirements for success in the AI era, but most organizations today struggle to keep pace with enterprise data needs, according to new research from Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) on behalf of Hewlett Packard Enterprise. For many organizations, AI will put their IT organizations at a crossroads. Capturing value from data to thrive in the era age of AI-enabled insight will require enterprises to rapidly mature their approach to hybrid cloud and how they store, manage and protect data across its lifecycle.

In the new research, 2023 HPE Data and Infrastructure Management Maturity Survey, four core themes emerged:

  • Hybrid Cloud: Two-thirds of enterprises agree that hybrid IT complexity slows digital initiatives.1 Data protection is cited as a major issue for hybrid cloud environments.

  • Data Management: Seventy-six percent of enterprises say current data management capabilities cannot keep up with business demands.2

  • Unstructured Data: Large unstructured data is the most problematic data type and file data is viewed as a significant opportunity to improve analytics and application development.3

  • Cloud Operations On-Prem: Eighty-nine percent believe that achieving a mature cloud operational model for on-premises infrastructure is vital to minimizing complexity and increasing agility.4

“Enterprises AI initiatives are important, but the first step should be to understand your foundational data infrastructure and capabilities and what opportunities exist to overcome complexity and accelerate your digital initiatives,” Ryan Brown, global field CTO, HPE. “With data spread across hybrid cloud environments, those that thrive in this next era will do so by adopting hybrid by design approaches that simplify their hybrid cloud operating model to unlock more value from their data.”

What results do data-first leaders achieve?

More mature organizations launch more products, beat competitors to market and better meet the needs of enterprise data innovators. Not only are more mature organizations delivering more value to their businesses, but they are also reducing infrastructure costs and time spent managing data.

How are enterprises doing it today?

  • Shifting from infrastructure consumption to infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and storage-as-a-service (STaaS)

  • Adopting self-service cloud operations for VM and workload management

  • Accelerating the automation of infrastructure management, data management and data protection
